The AI literacy requirement: Article 4, explained
This duty is live and has been since 2 February 2025. It applies to every provider and every deployer of AI systems, whatever the size of the business. Correct as of 3 August 2026.
Article 4 of Regulation (EU) 2024/1689 requires providers and deployers of AI systems to take measures supporting the AI literacy of their staff and of other persons dealing with the operation and use of AI systems on their behalf. If your business uses ChatGPT, Microsoft Copilot, Gemini or any similar tool for work, your business is a deployer and this article names you.

The duty for a small business
The article asks for measures, and measures leave records. The practical form is training matched to the way your business uses AI: what the tools are, what they must not be used for, and what the user must check before output leaves the building. The people covered are not only employees. Contractors and other persons operating AI systems on your behalf sit inside the wording.
A business that cannot show what measures it took has not discharged the duty. Keep the record: who was trained, on what, and when.
The training that ships with the system
The first module of every ComplianceSME system is AI literacy training, and it runs before any compliance work begins. In the EU AI Act system, B-001, that module carries the regulation itself: a member of staff who has never read the instrument works through it, then states what the Act requires and whether it binds the business. Running the module and keeping the record is how the Article 4 duty is met.
