Questions about Toolkit for ISO 14001
Does Toolkit for ISO 14001 apply to my business?
You apply ISO 14001 yourself if your organisation wishes to establish, operate, maintain and continually improve an environmental management system, per Clause 1. The standard is sector-agnostic, so manufacturing, construction, chemicals, logistics, waste management and utilities organisations may all seek conformity or certification.
Who does ISO 14001 apply to?
ISO 14001:2015 applies to any organisation that wishes to establish, operate, maintain and continually improve an EMS (Clause 1). Private companies, public bodies and not-for-profit entities of any size, type or nature may seek conformity or certification.
Does Toolkit for ISO 14001 apply to a small business?
ISO 14001 has no size threshold. The standard is explicitly designed to be scalable and applicable to small and medium-sized enterprises, which can apply it proportionately to their context, environmental aspects and resources.
When does ISO 14001 apply from, and what are the deadlines?
ISO 14001 does not impose statutory reporting deadlines. Certification runs on a two-stage initial audit, surveillance audits at approximately 12-month intervals, and a full recertification audit every three years, with internal audits and management reviews at planned intervals under Clause 9.2 and Clause 9.3.
What does ISO 14001 require me to do?
You must build and run an EMS covering Clauses 4 to 10: determine context and interested parties (Clauses 4.1, 4.2), set the EMS scope (Clause 4.3), establish an environmental policy (Clause 5.2), identify environmental aspects and compliance obligations (Clauses 6.1.2, 6.1.3), set objectives (Clause 6.2.1), control operations (Clause 8.1), and improve (Clause 10.3).
What records or documents does ISO 14001 require me to keep or produce?
You must control documented information under Clause 7.5 and retain documented information of the results of compliance evaluations under Clause 9.1.2. You must also maintain a current register of applicable legal and other requirements under Clause 6.1.3 and keep the environmental policy available to interested parties under Clause 5.2.
What happens if I do not comply with ISO 14001?
ISO is not a regulator and imposes no fines or legal penalties. A minor nonconformity requires corrective action typically within 90 days, a major nonconformity must typically be resolved within six months, and unresolved major nonconformities can lead to suspension or withdrawal of the certificate.
How is ISO 14001 different from ISO 14064?
ISO 14064 addresses greenhouse gas accounting and verification and may be used to quantify and report emissions supporting Clause 6.1.2 and Clause 9.1.1, while ISO 14001 is the environmental management system standard itself.
How do I start complying with ISO 14001?
The first practical step is to determine your context and the needs of interested parties under Clauses 4.1 and 4.2, then define the EMS scope under Clause 4.3 and establish the EMS under Clause 4.4. Top management then establishes the environmental policy under Clause 5.2.
Which ComplianceSME account includes the Toolkit for ISO 14001 toolkit?
