Questions about Toolkit for ISO 45001
Does Toolkit for ISO 45001 apply to my business?
You apply ISO 45001 to yourself if you wish to establish, operate, maintain and continually improve an occupational health and safety management system, whatever your size, type or nature (Clause 1). Construction, manufacturing, chemicals and organisations with 50 or more employees are the triggers.
Who does ISO 45001 apply to?
It applies to any organisation, regardless of size, type or nature, that wishes to establish, operate, maintain and continually improve an OH&S management system (Clause 1). All 35 obligations fall on the organisation or on its top management, and none fall on governments, regulators or certification bodies.
Does Toolkit for ISO 45001 apply to a small business?
There is no size threshold, exemption or relief. Clause 1 states the standard is applicable regardless of organisation size, and Annex A gives flexible implementation guidance that acknowledges differences in complexity, resources and capability.
When does ISO 45001 apply from, and what are the deadlines?
There are no statutory reporting deadlines. Certification runs as a two-stage audit, surveillance audits at roughly 12 and 24 months, and recertification every three years, with internal audits at planned intervals (Clause 9.2) and management reviews at planned intervals (Clause 9.3).
What does ISO 45001 require me to do?
You must build and run an OH&S management system across Clauses 4 to 10, including hazard identification (Clause 6.1.2), the hierarchy of controls (Clause 8.1.2), worker participation (Clause 5.4), emergency preparedness and response (Clause 8.2) and incident investigation (Clause 10.2).
What records or documents does ISO 45001 require me to keep or produce?
You must control documented information (Clause 7.5) and maintain a legal register as a living document, updated whenever applicable legal requirements change (Clause 6.1.3). The standard does not prescribe a manual, procedures or records in specific formats.
What happens if I do not comply with ISO 45001?
ISO is not a regulator and imposes no fines. A minor nonconformity needs corrective action typically within 90 days, a major nonconformity can stop the certificate until resolved, typically within six months, and unresolved cases lead to suspension and then withdrawal.

How do I start complying with ISO 45001?
The first practical step is to understand your internal and external context and the needs and expectations of workers and other interested parties (Clause 4.1 and Clause 4.2), then determine the scope of the OH&S management system (Clause 4.3) and establish it (Clause 4.4).
